Lesson Plan: Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift

Gulliver's Travels, based on the book by Jonathan Swift, adapted by John Escott, Illustrated by Kim Palmer, 1995, England: Brimax Books Ltd (0-86112-985-7)

To be read along with the original Gulliver's Travels

Grade Level-High School
Subject-English (frequently read in honors English classes)

Objectives and Goals
  • To better understand the story of Gulliver's Travels
  • To create a presentation depicting symbolism
Anticipatory Set:
  • Remind students that this is an abridged version of the original text
Direct Instruction:
  • Discuss Symbolism in the book
Guided Practice:
  • Invite students to write different symbols and meanings found in the book on the board
  • Answer any questions
Closure:
  • Explain homework assignment
Independent Practice:
  • Homework-Create a 5 minute presentation with a visual aide (mobile, poster, diorama)that explains at least 4 elements of symbolism in the story.  Feel free to use the illustrations seen in the abridged version to guide your visual aides.
Required Materials and Equipment:
  • N/A
Assessment and Follow-Up:
  • Present presentations
  • Discuss the ideas students present
  • If they receive a passing grade, then they have met the objectives.
