Media Used: Watercolor and ink
Annotation:
Three siblings prepare for Halloween by making their costumes, and making post-trick-or-treating plans with their friend, a Budhist Panda.. The Panda treats the children to a ghost story that can be interpreted many ways.
Personal Reaction:
While this book does have lots of opportunities for discussion and does allow for readers to take their own lesson from the story, it is rather creepy at the same time. On the first page, a child opens the door to a giant Budhist Panda that talks. I just find that weird. The pictures, however, are very enjoyable!
Detailed Description of Art:
The author uses different styles of art in order to differentiate between the main story and the story that is being told in the story. The main story is fully colored and has gorgeous detail in the artwork. The colors are mainly muted shades of oranges and browns, but that helps give the feel of Halloween and fall. When Stillwater begins to tell a story to the children, the pictures change to black and white sketches with hints of color. This technique allows readers to keep track of what pictures belong to which part of the book.
