Annotation:
Two boys form an unlikely friendship when "Pink," an African American rescues an injured white boy named "Say." They form a close bond that is quickly torn apart by the cruel effects of the Civil War.
Personal Reaction:
This book is definitely not written for young readers. The friendship formed between the two boys is very like friendships made by most children/teenagers. Young children who do not fully understand the civil war would be extremely shocked and unnerved by the horrible end their friendship has. Even I was amazed by the cruelness that was written and illustrated in this book. I do, however, like the fact that Patricia Polacco wrote this book to honor the boy that her ancestor befriended. This shows that friendships can form between all types of people during even the worst of times.
Curricular Connection: 8th grade history or US history-civil war
