Media Used: Mixed media (collage, markers etc.)

Annotation:
During a museum tour, a docent explains to a group of children where the sphinx came from. The story follows the creation of the sphinx all the way to the repair and display of the sphinx.

Personal Reaction:
I enjoyed this book.  It introduced new words and had entertaining pictures to accompany every step of the acquisition process. I found it interesting that the museum workers actually repaired the sphinx, using modern technology.  I would have thought that doing such a thing would take away from the value of the piece.

Detailed Comments on Art:
The art is very pleasing, yet very simple.  Honestly, the book looks like it was illustrated by an eight year old, but somehow manages to be appealing.  Each image featured in the book looks like it was colored in by marker, and the artist left some lines where the color was not blended in all the way.  Obviously, since the illustrator is a successful adult artist, they did this on purpose.  In addition to the marker sketches, a collage technique is also used.  Many of the words in the story are outlined in a collage fashion to make the key words stand out.  This art style will appeal to people of all ages.

My Top 10

Repetition:  The entire book features phrases that are added on to over and over again.  All of the long phrases lead back to "and ordered by the Pharaoh."

Rhythm: The repeated part of the book has a jumpy rhythm that helps the book flow well.  One example of this rhythm from the unpaged book is "dumped there by the stepson, marveled at by the Egyptian priests, chiseled by the sculptor, and ordered by the Pharaoh."
