Now & Ben: The Modern Inventions of Benjamin Franklin, by Gene Barretta

Grade Level-7th Grade
Subject-History (Scientific Revolution)


Objectives and Goals
  • To understand where current technology originated from
  • Practice research skills

Anticipatory Set:
  • Remind the students that the book is a dramatized presentation of the facts
  • Discuss the inventions that Ben Franklin made prior to reading this book

Direct Instruction:
  • Read the book to the class

Guided Practice:
  • Take the class to the library and offer them guidance in selecting materials to research inventions

Closure:
  • Explain homework

Independent Practice:
  • Homework-you may either write a paper or write a picture book explaining the differences between 5 pieces of modern technology and what was originally used in place of it.  Included information on who invented each piece of technology

Required Materials and Equipment:
  • Library

Assessment and Follow-Up:
  • If the student receives a passing grade they will have demonstrated an understanding of research skills and inventions
