Here Comes The Garbage Barge!, by Jonah Winter, 2010, New York: Schwartz & Wade Books (978-0-375-95218-0)
Awards: 2011 Top 10 Books for Youth
Author/Illustrator Website: http://jonahwinterbooks.com
Media Used: hand-built 3D sets shot with a Canon digital SLR camera grafted onto the back of a Horseman 4x5 camera. The line art was drawn with Hunt 108 pen nibs and Higgins waterproof black ink on paper.
Annotation:
There is so much garbage and nowhere to put it. The garbage gets loaded onto a boat and taken down the river. People all over complain of the smell. Finally the garbage gets burned.
Personal Reaction:
I like the fact that this book points out that all of the trash we make has to go somewhere. This is a great book to present to children when teaching about recycling or earth day.
Detailed Description of Art:
The art for this book is very impressive, especially after you find out about the hardwork it took to make the art for the book. Amazon.com features a video ( http://www.amazon.com/Comes-Garbage-Barge-Jonah-Winter/dp/0375852182 ) that tells how the pictures were made. The pictures really make this story worth reading. Every page is full of color and as many of the images are photos, the pictures are a mixture of realism with cartoons.
